Painter

Carmen Beezley-Drake is a well established artist in the Rockhampton region who has been painting and drawing for over 40 years. Her experience is evident in the intricate detail of all her works and although she has many years of experience she still approaches new work, be it on canvas or paper, with a mixture of excitement and trepidation.

Being a dedicated member of the Flying Arts Inc for the past 20 years and a member of the Cooee Bay Workshop for the past 30 years has kept Carmen’s techniques, ideas and talent for painting landscapes at a very high standard.

Carmen paints her larger works in her studio from sketches or memory and will often work on these images for a long period of time, repeatedly doing small paintings to try and perfect the image or her vision of a place before attempting to paint the final large image.

Capturing the essence and spirit of the Australian landscape through painting requires great observation and much more that meets the eye. As Carmen describes her explorations into nature as an experience of the senses, to truly connect with any natural landscape one must take in the sound, smell and feel of an area and also observe the small creatures such as the ants and flies.

Shane Fitzgerald

Photographer

My work is primarily based in photography through which I am fortunate to have experienced varied landscapes, cultures and environments in the course of my practice.

I have achieved major international recognition for my unique photomedia work, which is primarily concerned with the ongoing exploration and creation of dialogues that delve into the symbiotic relationship between space, place and the ethereal.

The work predominately extends towards evocative conceptual representations of the Queensland landscape and psyche, and the viewer¹s collective unconsciousness through explorations in nature and the natural realm.

The ocean, reef and rainforest has always been a major influence on my work. This marine/environment theme transposes well into my chosen art form of contemporary jewellery. I enjoy the processes in silversmithing and enamelling, from creating the initial design, to how it inevitably evolves and metamorphoses into a 3-dimensional piece.

Individual handcrafted pieces are created using a variety of materials selected for their uniqueness and expressive quality to enhance the initial design.

Textile Artist

Julie Thornton grew up surrounded by a family of women who were dressmakers and was inspired to create with textiles. After participating in workshops to enhance her skills she then gained the confidence to transform her ideas into reality and develop her own unique style of fibre art.

After sewing for the family and looking for something more creative with textiles Julie was introduced to patchwork and then discovered machine embroidery and other related techniques. More recently Julie has been concentrating on wearable art, something she has had much success with in the past.

After visiting London in 2003, with the “Australian Art to Wear” Exhibition at Alexandra Place for the Monumental Knitting and Stitching Show, the Quilting Arts Magazine in USA featured one of Julie Thornton’s garments on the cover as the feature article on “Australia Art to Wear”. This highlight in her career enabled Julie to attend the McGregor School in Toowoomba, exhibit at “Quilters Guild – Art to Wear” at Darling Harbour in Sydney and again in the prestigious London Exhibition.

Since this time Julie has exhibited in a number of galleries locally and throughout Australia and New Zealand. Julie has also competed in various competitions throughout Australia and won a substantial number of awards such as; Best Designer 2003 and 1at Prize for Art to Wear 2004/2005 in the Australian Wool Fashion Awards.

Julie Thornton in collaboration with Kay Lanyon and Toni Martin created the textile river for the refurbished Walter Reid Cultural Centre as a part of the Art Build –in Project

Persevering with her passion for creating fibre art, teaching, developing textile skills and family means a very busy life, but the joys of creating individual pieces and inspiring others to create is worth the effort it in the end for Julie to continue on with her passion.
